Today, I came across an article on cbc.ca untitled "Quebec government sued for buying Microsoft software". From what I gather from the CBC article and the court document, the title is a bit misleading and should rather be something along the lines of "Quebec government sued for not considering non-proprietary software solutions".
I am really happy that FACIL (FACIL, pour l'appropriation collective de l'informatique libre) is moving ahead with this lawsuit. I don't expect changes any time soon from our governments, but I think this is a good step in bringing more awareness to philosophical issues surrounding our use of technology.
Many of the comments left on the CBC article clearly demonstrate a lack of knowledge of Linux, FLOSS (Free/Libre/Open Source Software) and commonly used software requirements and standards. I hope that this is the beginning of an open and honest discussion.
